Rebellious Reds
It all started as a private experiment in the 1940’s, when a Marchese dreamed of making a Tuscan wine as lush and elegant as the Bordeaux wines he loved.
The family planted nonnative varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, eventually releasing their first successful vintage in 1968.
Other rebellious Tuscan winemakers soon followed, breaking with tradition and Italy’s strict wine regulations. Because their wines didn’t fit the rules they were originally labeled simply vino da tavola- “table wine.”
By the mid-1970’s, these rich, ambitious wines had earned a much more fitting nickname: SUPER TUSCANS.
Goes to show…Rules are overrated. Great wine isn’t.
